Professor of East European History at Friedrich Schiller Universität Jena; since 2010 director of Imre Kertész Kolleg Jena. His monographs include Ostmitteleuropa im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert (München 2010, Oldenbourg Grundriss der Geschichte, 38.) and
Schulalltag und nationale Integration in Ungarn. Slowaken, Rumänen und Siebenbürger Sachsen in Auseinandersetzung mit der ungarischen Staatsidee, 1867-1914 (München 2003 [Südosteuropäische Arbeiten, 115). He is editor of the series The Routledge History Handbook of Central and Eastern Europe in the Twentieth Century, and together with Jochen Böhler and Włodzimierz Borodziej the volume Legacies of Violence. Eastern Europe´s First World War (De Gruyter/ Oldenbourg, 2014).
